OPTIMIZING STORAGE AND BANDWIDTH FOR WEB BROADCASTING
All the tools for broadcasting audio and video on the Internet allow you to throttle back the quality of your final output to meet the capabilities of the person viewing the files. For instance, you could take a video and create low, medium, and high-quality versions. These options exist on many web sites that have audio and video content. The better the quality of the movie or recording, the larger the file size and greater the storage and bandwidth requirements.
You can also change the physical dimensions of the video. A video that is 120 x 60 pixels will be smaller in file size than a 640 x 480 pixels video of the same bit rate. Finally, you can modify the audio settings. You might not need to have CD-quality audio, for example. If your movie is just two people talking, it may be worth considering to scale the audio down to AM radio quality (which is about one-fourth of the file size of CD-quality sound).
HOW DOES WEB STREAMING ENABLE INTERNET BROADCASTING?
All technologies that enable the broadcasting of video and audio over the Internet essentially do it by using a technology called packet streaming.
All computer files are made up of 1's and 0's. They join together to create logical sections, or packets, that comprise the complete file. For something like a text document there is only a single packet that makes up the file. A Web page is made of several packets including the HTML document, individual graphic files, style sheets, scripts, etc. Audio and video files are comprised of hundreds, or even thousands, of packets. When playing a video, you don't need all the packets at any one time. All you really need are the packets for any one point in time.
For this reason, you can "stream" video and audio over the Internet. The end result is that for a full feature movie a visitor doesn't need to download the whole movie—only the current instance. This way, the movie starts playing before the file is completely downloaded.
All video-streaming systems also perform buffering, which is a technique of downloading more video than needed without having to download the entire movie. This is in case there are any delays or interruptions in the Internet connection. The movie will always play even if Internet speeds fluctuate.
